OH MY GOSH! Who remembers Top Gun? I swear, my little brother watched this testosterone-fueled film (from a VHS tape on our tiny all-in-one TV, no less) at least 596 times. And Mason’s senior photos so remind me of that movie!
Mason is the last of the Ramsey bunch for me to photograph and I looked forward to his session ALL YEAR. I’m sure you can see why. What is my life that I get to photograph a handsome young man and his plane? It isn’t a prop, by the way—Mason actually has his pilot’s license and I am beyond impressed by this achievement. I know juggling high school and athletics (hello, Argyle football!) in addition to completing all the hours required for a license is an enormous accomplishment in anyone’s book. Also, I had no idea how stinking cute the plane would be, and I kept thinking about how cool it would’ve been to have a friend in high school who could take me for a ride in his plane! So. Cool.
I know a senior portrait session wasn’t what Mason was looking forward to doing on this particular day, and I totally get it. Most senior boys aren’t. If you have a son and he is into it, count yourself lucky! But if he’s giving you a hard time, count yourself normal and then make him do it anyway. I promise you, by the end of the session these guys realize it’s not so bad. Mason was a classic example—I have a feeling he is going to love having these images forever…and if he doesn’t, his momma certainly will!
Speaking of Mason’s momma, Jane is the sweetest client ever and Monica and I squealed with joy when we saw her booking come through early in the year. I think she booked his spring session at the very beginning of senior year! I just love this family so much. As I said, I photographed both of his big sisters too, and let me just say Mason has some big shoes to fill following after McKenna and Caleigh Ramsey!
We had a few rain delays and mishaps while trying to nail down Mason’s shoot. Time was ticking to get it on the calendar, but we held out hope and got it done! Things just seem to work out the way they’re supposed to. Big sister Caleigh was in town on the day of the shoot and McKenna had just graduated from college (holy cow, how time flies!), so they got to tag along. It was perfect!
At the end of the day, Mason was much more comfortable in front of the camera than he probably realized was possible. We truly got some of my most favorite images of a senior boy I’ve ever taken and I think it’ll be difficult to compete with these for a long time. Many, many thanks to the Ramsey family for inviting me into this wonderful family of yours for so many years!
