Marla, Hannah’s mom, oozes kindness and has an amazing South African Accent to boot! When I read through her completed parent questionnaire, I was so excited to meet her daughter, Hannah, and plan our upcoming session. Riding horses is a huge part of Hannah’s life, so we decided to include her horses and their barn in many of the shots. Hannah has a quiet confidence, soulful eyes, and beautiful hair. Capturing her with her horses highlighted these qualities in the best way and made for some amazing images!
I knew it would be a challenge to capture still moments with these magnificent animals. Thankfully, although I don’t necessarily advertise as an equestrian photographer, I actually have quite a bit of previous experience photographing girls with their horses—including a session with Baylor grad Logan when she was only 13! These experiences have taught me to take a more casual, relationship-oriented approach to photographing seniors and their horses (or any pet really). During Hannah’s shoot, her horses had so much energy and were in constant movement. It’s moments like this that I really appreciate still photography and how it captures a frame—because in reality, that horse never paused for one second! I was honestly nervous that I hadn’t captured anything worthy of the time we spent together, but I found that there were so many gorgeous shots to pull from when looking through the proofs. I wish Hannah the best and I can’t wait to see what this adventurous girl accomplishes in the future!
