11 Tinder Profile Picture Tips To Triple Your Matches TODAY

Corporate Packages

black + white Karina Louise Photography

I love color photos. If you take a look at my San Francisco photography, I almost always shoot in color. It’s how we see the world and for me, color portraits feel so much more natural and relatable than black + white. I rarely even think about changing a photo to black + white. Recently this changed when I was challenged to post 5 B+W photos for 5 days on Facebook by my friend, Arash.

It was a fun challenge, and it got me looking at my photos in a different way. And, as I was looking through my thousands of photos I got to see rather quickly which color photos are good candidates to turn into B+W. For showing photographic detail in contexts such as wedding portraits and architectural, this can be stunning. But for the most part, I found that very few of the winners in this black and white competition were natural portraits that would be used for profile pictures.

5 questions before switching to B+W

1. Does the photo have contrast?
This is super important. If the photo is soft and monochromatic, changing to B+W will turn the photo milky gray and make it hard to distinguish detail.

2. Does the photo look busy with too many colors?
A color photo works well when there aren’t too many colors. So if you have a busy colored outfit and several colors in the background the photo is a great candidate for black + white. It brings the focus back to you.

black + white profile picture Karina Louise Photography

3. Was it taken in B+W?
If the answer is yes, and you love the photo you don’t really have another option.

4. Does it look current?
Be careful, Ann Pierce of Photofeeler says that a B+W profile photo can look dated or even make you look older. With current online dating photos and business portraits for LinkedIn, we don’t want anyone wondering if this photo was taken years ago.

5. Do you want it to catch someone’s eye?
Think of someone scrolling through a whole bunch of online dating or LinkedIn profiles. A pop of pink or turquoise will definitely catch their eye over grays.

At the end of the day, it is really all about your personal preference. But I strongly encourage you to ask these questions before turning your next social media profile photo into black + white.

And they say there’s no such thing as a perfect Tinder profile picture…

#1: The three mistakes you’re making

There are three things you’re probably doing that are slaughtering your results on Tinder right now.

And should you be the rare gem that doesn’t make any of these mistakes, then save a friend from collecting some serious panda points by sharing these tips with him.

I’ll keep them short and clear, so we can move right on to the fixes.

Mistake 1: The Selfie (destroyed by science)

Who knows your good angles better than yourself?

You’ve studied your own mug more than anyone else. And you know a selfie can look damn good.

However, you’re overlooking two crucial points:

  • A selfie sub communicates two things:
    1. No one takes photos of me, but me. I guess I’m not that interesting to be around.
    2. I am constantly looking at myself and I take photos of myself because I’m just very into myself.
  • Because you’ve seen (and maybe even studied) your own face so much, you focus on specific details others don’t see. For this reason you will make your selfies the way YOU think you look best, but strangers will disagree. The same goes with asking friends for your best photos. They already have formulated an opinion of you and have way more context than random strangers on Tinder.

Btw, even if your friends think they can judge your photos objectively. Science has proven they can’t.

Mistake 2: Distractions tell her brain to swipe you left

You read that right. Allow me to explain.

The more distractions there are in your first photo, the less likely you’ll get a swipe right.

Why? Neurological research has shown us that the more a woman’s brain has to work to process your picture, the less likely she will like you.

Turning this into applicable tips:

Eliminate distractions in the background, especially other people

Make sure the contrast between the background and yourself is strong enough. If you have dark hair, go for a light background. If you have light hair, go for a dark background.

More detailed information about this is found in my award winning No Matches on Tinder article.

Mistake 3: Eyes on the prize

The prize being your potential match.

She has to be able to see your eyes.

Why?

Eyes indicate what we are interested in. And if she can’t see your eyes, then she can’t tell what you are up to. That’s potentially dangerous for her.

Just look at what Jordan Peterson has to say about it in this short clip:

Either way, DON’T cover your eyes.

That means no funny masks or hats that covers your eyeballs.

And definitely no sunglasses.

#2: The Tinder profile pic that works like a charm

There’s one Tinder profile rule you need to respect if you want girls to match you.

Dismiss this holy truth, and plenty of girls will dismiss you…

…whatever type of photo you are going to work with on Tinder.

ESPECIALLY when we are talking about your MAIN Tinder profile pic.

I’m talking about the Face & Torso Rule here.

That’s right.

Your first photo should show no more of you than your face, and your torso.

So all of you guys skipping leg day… you’re in luck.

Neuroscientific research has proven this to be the most effective.

Let’s use this photo as an example.

This guy had a photoshoot done to get better results on dating apps.

(More on photoshoots in a bit)

And I got to say, this is a pretty good shot of him.

But not as a Tinder profile pic.

Because it’s showing more than Head & Torso.

Further down the line, you want to have a full body shot like this one.

And that’s where it can come in handy.

Jut make sure that as a first photo, you’ll have something with a composition similar to this one:

This shot shows just the upper third of the body AKA the Head & Torso.

And that’s all you need.

#3: The wingman that women love ❤️

Here are three things that land you hotter matches:

  • Looking happy
  • Looking relaxed
  • Looking friendly

And here’s how to achieve all three in ONE photo:

Pose together with your dog.

Research has shown this to be very effective.

If you own a dog, I’m pretty sure you have a cool photo with the dooger.

And if you don’t, I’ll tell you how to get one, further in the article.

Now if you DON’T have a dog, then you’re in a bit of a pickle.

If you have any friends with a fun dog, borrow theirs. Take it for a walk as a thank you for their help.

Now if you live in a big city and your closeby friends don’t have any dogs…

…then you’re in the same situation I am in.

For a YouTube video where I was on a quest to shoot the perfect Tinder photo for my friend Yens, we needed a dog.

And we didn’t have one.

So we did what any shameless person would do, and asked a passerby if we could use their fluffy companion for a quick photo.

Here’s what we shot:

Sure, the dog isn’t his.

And sure, it doesn’t seem like it loves Yens very much haha.

But it did help us shoot a photo that skyrocketed Yens’ Tinder success.

While other people were enjoying summer, drinking a beer…

…I was reading up on about 69 scientific studies on ‘How to be attractive in photos’.

Why?

To turn an average looking guy unto a lady killer.

I invited my friend Yens over for a QUEST.

Shooting the perfect Tinder profile picture.

Yens never put much effort into online dating, and it showed…

This is what he was working with:

The photo you see here was the best picture his profile had to offer… and it was set LAST.

Needless to say, his Tinder performed very poorly……

Until we finished our quest, and Yens went to work with his brand new profile.

Have a look for yourself:

Here’s some extra tips for your dog photo:

Your dog can be in your first photo. Other people CAN’T.

Men looking for a serious relationship, benefit most from a Tinder dog photo. That’s because taking care of a dog requires responsibility and nurturing skills. Just what you need when raising a child.

Show your dog once, maximum twice.

Most people don’t like a dog-freak that is with his animal 24/7.

#4: Extreme amount of matches with this Tinder picture

Time to get a photo that will get you women because they’ll feel like a princess around you.

While at the same time showing that you got stuff going on in your life.

Believe it or not, I’ve had student that were pretty damn good looking, yet their results lacked behind.

While at the same time, guys who are less good looking, but did implement this type of photo, got good results.

So, what type of Tinder profile picture am I talking about?

I’m talking about the tinder photo for men that shows that you’ve got BALLS.

Not by being naked and lifting up your shlong. That’s probably the quickest way to get banned.

We’re talking extreme sports here.

Or just extreme. It doesn’t necessarily have to a sport.

And it doesn’t even have to be THAT extreme. Just a little of that risky vibe is all you need.

So in my case I’ll show a photo of me surfing.

It’s not super extreme, but it is quite an intense sport with some dangerous elements to it.

A boxing photo is another option. This will show her that I’m not afraid of confrontation. And should shit hit the fan, I can stand my ground and protect her.

Personally, I prefer the photo of me surfing, over a fighting one. Associations with surfing are more seductive than the ones with fighting.

A screenshot from one of the frames that a GoPro camera on my surfboard shot.

Holy Tip

The only profile picture you shouldn’t edit, is one that is already edited by your photographer.

All shots you make yourself, can be made more impressive with some quick edits.

One student of mine who’s currently doing great on Tinder, uses this photo:

Great for when you don’t:

  • Surf
  • Snowboard or ski
  • Climb
  • Skate
  • Breakdance
  • Fight (martial arts)
  • Mountain bike

If you’ve ever been paragliding, skydiving, or any similar activity that induces fear

…great!

Use it.

#5: When you should use a black and white Tinder photo (and when you shouldn’t)

It don’t matter if you’re black or white

—Michael Jackson

But it does matter if you’re photo is black and white, or color.

And I’ll tell you right now when you’ll get more girls in your life with color pics

…and when black and white is the way to get the girls.

Let’s start with a general rule:

Always use color.

It’s a pretty good Tinder rule to go with. As long as you keep in mind that there’s a couple exceptions where black and white will get girls’ hearts pumping faster than color will.

The first one is explained by photographer Carla Coulson:

One reason she uses black and white is when she wants “to cut to the core of a portrait and let the person stand out not the colours.

A good example of this, is this portrait of TextGod coach Dan:

Here’s what photographyvox says:

“Humans see the world in color, and a rendition of the world in monochrome makes us pause and look closely. Removing color from a picture helps the viewer to focus on a subject’s emotional state. Black and white portraiture lets the audience see the subject’s face and read his or her eyes without distraction.”

I especially love the last sentence.

You’re drawn to Dan’s eyes way more than when this photo would be in color. Where the colorful walls behind him soaked up much of the attention.

Another good reason to use black and white, is when your skin isn’t perfect (yet).

Both Coach Dan and one of our students were still figuring out how to give their skin that healthy glow.

We noticed that black and white photography can make you look more attractive until you figured out a way to optimize your skin.

I love this raw and manly photo of one of the most dedicated students I’ve ever seen.

To repeat Carla’s words: by cutting out the color, this photo really lets the person stand out.

I’ll show you another example of a great black and white shot in a bit.

For now, just enjoy this ‘before and after’ of my student:

BANG BANG!

On to tip number 6.

#6: The Tinder photo that makes girls want to hang with you

How do you convey to girls that you are FUN? How do you make them want to hang out with you, instead of quickly swiping you left?

There’s multiple ways to do this, and the more ways you combine, the more likely she’ll swipe you right.

One of these ways, is by showing her that you are not afraid of adventure.

Everyone loves adventure. If you think it’s more of a manly thing, then you’re wrong.

And even if certain people don’t love actively going on an adventure, they’re likely still interested in seeing or hearing about it.

Just imagine an introverted & nerdy person reading a fantasy book filled with adventure.

Or a girly girl enjoying a movie filled with crazy escapades.

She doesn’t necessarily want to be part of them. But she does love witnessing them.

This applies to the extreme tinder pics for guys we talked about earlier, too. Do the girls watching my Tinder profile want to be sitting on my surfboard in a stormy-looking ocean with an ominous sky lurking above?

Not very likely.

Do these enjoy seeing this shot?

Quite likely.

Would they like hearing the sick story I can tell about what happened that day?

Very likely.

Anyway, this adventurous vibe isn’t exclusive to photos of extreme sports…

…there’s also just… adventurous photos.

Like photos of your travels!

Like this one from coach Dan, for example:

Does he look like a super ballsy muthafucka with nuts of steel?

Nope, he doesn’t.

But does he look like a well-travelled guy that can tell some stories about his trips?

He sure does.

Same goes for this photo of me:

Do I look like the sickest mountain climber ever, putting Alex Honnold to shame?

Definitely not.

I look like a tourist on top of a mountain. That’s it.

BTW: If you’re unaware of who Alex Honnold is, and you like a story about a great adventure, check out this trailer:

But can I tell a cool story about where that was, and the things I experienced on that trip?

You bet I can.

If you have pictures that show you’re going on adventures…

…show them!

It’s a matter of time before your matches ask you for the story.

#7: The Tinder photo that makes social proof work for you (instead of against you)

Please, avoid this next crucial mistake at all costs. It’s costing you more matches than you can miss.

I’m talking about a blunder I see time and time again when it comes to group photos.

It seems like guys all over the world are under a spell cast by dating coaches from the middle ages:

“Use a group photo, make sure it has a many hot girls in there. It’s social proof and preselection. Girls will want to fight for you because you already show them that you are the truest of pimps YOLO WAFA”

Hmm, yeah…

Let’s go over some rules when it comes to group photos. So they actually get you girls, instead of cockblocking you.

Let’s start with a group pic of me with a whole bunch of friends playing a game of paintball.

Can’t go wrong with this one, can you?

One photo combining:

  • An extreme sport
  • Social proof of friends
  • Adventure!

Here’s the photo:

Wow, great Tinder group photo!

Or is it?

Holy Tip:

It should be instantly clear who you are in ANY Tinder picture.

If a girl on a dating app doesn’t know guy you are, she’ll feel frustration and likely swipe you left.

Do note that it can be beneficial to cause frustration. But when she’s just looking at your profile and you aren’t starting the conversation yet… then you’ll quickly get passed on.

Never forget that it takes 0.1 second and a flick of her finger to get rid of that frustration.

Alright, so it should always be clear who you are in the photo.

So how about this one:

I’m the only guy in the picture PLUS I’m surrounded by women.

Social proof paradise! Skrrrrrrrt!

I’m not gonna lie, this photo is perfect…

…If you’re going for the ‘Biggest Douche on Tinder’ award.

And women know exactly what you’re trying to do here.

So remember:

Holy Tip:

Avoid douchebag photos with only women around you.

Now you won’t hear me say that group photos with women won’t ever work. There’s always a percentage of girls that will react to them. But you can attract these women in a more classy manner.

How about this next shot:

It’s still just one guy surrounded by women, but it has a bit more class.

Everyone is dressed sixties style and posing together for a quick snap. You happen to be the only guy so it’s only logical you’re the center of attention.

Do you see how this photo is a better bet than the selfie that screams “PARTY UNTIL I DIE WOOHOOOW BOOZE AND BITCHES BRUH!”?

But why even risk being seen as a guy on the prowl for one night stands? Why not go for a more balanced option with other men in the picture?

Like this one, for example:

This photo is a great opportunity to talk about the third group photo rule:

Holy Tip:

Be the center of attention in your Tinder pictures.

“But Louis, you aren’t in the center of the picture…”

Correct, I am not.

But when looking at this photo, who is the bigger man? Not just physically, but who seems like higher status one?

Which guy is drawing more attention?

Is it the dude who is positioned BEHIND the two girls?

Or is it the guy who is on the front row, having a girl hanging on to him?

This other guy happens to be an awesome sunuva B, but if it were him posting this photo on his Tinder, he’d be making a mistake.

Just like I will never post this photo on my online dating profile:

Even though the girl in the photo is my girlfriend, and my hand is resting on her thigh…

…it just looks like I’m trying to get her attention and she’s not very much into it. While my good friend on the left seems like the big baws.

He is on the front row, casually leaning to the side, and generally looking pretty fly.

He is clearly the higher status guy in this shot.

And I look like a poorly dressed extra…

So, always remember:

Don’t choose a photo where other guys are stealing the show. Go for the profile picture where YOU are the man.

‘Being the man’… let’s talk about that some more in the next tip.

And join some of the adventures me and my girlfriend have on Tinder here:

#8: The Tinder photo that shows her you got your shit together

Women want a man. Not just any man… they want THE MAN.

Here are three ways you can be THAT guy in your Tinder photos, instead of looking like a cuckboy, following other people’s lead.

The first way is obtainable for every man out there.

That includes YOU.

All you need to do, is have respect for your body, and train it.

That’s right. I want you to go to the gym.

If you already do… great! Keep it up.

If you don’t… then consider starting.

There’re about 69 reasons for guys to go to the gym. 69 reasons I won’t list here. But I will list three of them that influence your Tinder success BIGTIME:

  1. You’ll be sexier naked
  2. You’ll be sexier dressed
  3. You’ll radiate discipline

The second point is probably the most underrated reason to work out.

The attractiveness of literally all your (dating) photos will go up by a significant percentage if you hit the gym.

Just imagine this photo we saw earlier, if I still had my pre-transformation body:

Without the frame of my body being as it is now, this photo would lose part of it’s attractiveness.

It would still have the badass-extreme-sports vibe.

But it wouldn’t be AS good as it is now.

Anyway, the point I want to focus on here is #3:

You’ll radiate discipline.

Maybe you already have tried going to the gym.

And maybe you quit after a while.

Just like 80% of all people who decide to work out as a new year’s resolution, quit just one month later.

Then you’ll know that transforming your body isn’t easy as pie.

The guys that do stick to their plan, are usually disciplined men.

That’s a very attractive feature to exhibit.

And another reason to show your body in one of your photos.

Just remember the rules when taking off your shirt:

Holy Tip:

When using a shirtless photo on your online dating profile, remember this:

Mirror selfies and any other type of selfies are out of the question. Only use a photo with an arty ring to it or an action shot.

There’s no need to show a post-gym selfie here. You already know what that looks like and there’s no reason to give your eyes AIDS.

(See, I genuinely care about you.)

(If you’re offended by my AIDS joke, I’m sorry. It must be difficult suffering political correctness.)

Anyway, this is the type of skin showing photo that DOES work:

This shot taken in a park in Cologne, Germany, has a bit of an arty vibe to it.

And besides showing that I’m in shape, it also shows a cool place. With the empty park, the line of trees, and the sharp Telecom tower peaking rising above.

By making this shot black and white, it gets that perfume-ad-feel.

It’s not just about the body anymore. This picture shows equal amounts of travel, adventure, art, and manliness.

She likes the leader in you.

How do you show her that you’ve got your shit together when you aren’t jacked?

A good question.

With many answers.

And two of them are relevant here.

The first one is this:

Show your match the leader in you.

There’re two types of men. Those who lead, and those who follow.

Women like the first.

If you have a job or hobby where you LEAD, then show her.

But before uploading your photo, avoid this trap:

Many men’s dating profiles have a photo of them doing a speech.

They assume that this is that type of photo I’m talking about.

If you did a presentation at work for ten colleagues, then this isn’t necessarily a good photo.

If you did a presentation at your hobby club for six fellow hobbyists… then I doubt this photo will make you look like a leader.

Everyone has done a presentation at some point in their life.

Holy Tip:

If your Tinder picture show her that you’re just like everyone else, then it’s a bad picture.

Let’s look at another way to exhibit your ballerness.

She likes the success you have.

This is one of the fastest ways to get a girl hooked on you. Without even texting her.

Everyone loves success.

It’s the reason why the internet is swamped with motivational videos, sudden success stories, and #10yearchallenge body transformations.

Credit: Thylane Blondeau/Instagram

So, to state the obvious: if you are successful at what you do…

…then show her!

Show don’t tell.

Dora The Explorer

If you won a sports competition… upload a Tinder picture.

If you dominated a spelling contest… upload a Tinder photo.

If you came in at any impressive spot at whatever event… upload a friggin’ Tinder picture.

If you won anything as a kid, and you have a photo of it… upload it. That shit is funny.

“But Louis… I am not in shape AND I never have the lead AND I never won anything AND I’m not successful. What now?”

Then it’s time to slap yourself in the face, and grab life by the balls. Time to make some serious changes. But until you do, I have a Tinder picture tip for you that doesn’t require any of the above.

#9: The Tinder picture that makes her laugh (score easy points with this one!)

This tip is easy to use, doesn’t require you to do anything, and makes her laugh!

Because a great thinker didn’t lie when he once said:

A ho that’s laughing at your joke, will rarely give the unmatch button a poke
—Isaac Newton

So without further ado, I present to you the easiest way to make your Tinder profile more attractive:

Add a meme to it.

It doesn’t matter how sexy, ugly, talented, useless, ambitious, or indifferent you are.

Everyone can add a funny picture to their online dating account.

The only requirement is selecting a meme that YOU like.

One that makes YOU laugh.

Not me, not your mom, and not your ex.

YOU.

That’s crucial for the added side-effect of this tip.

Quick question:

Ever been on a date where halfway you discover your match and you are actually not a match at all?

The corners of her mouth barely move whenever you crack a joke.

And when she’s trying to make you laugh, you catch yourself dozing off…

Not an ideal scenario.

Avoid a situation like this by adding a meme that you like to your profile.

Coach Dan is, for some reason, obsessed with this mediocre meme:

An absolute top tier meme according to Amsterdam’s biggest manslut.

It’s so good he will always show it to his matches.

And by doing so he screens if they find the same things funny.

Just like how I screened girls for other things when I had this meme as my texting app profile pic:

Wooh, some spicy images just came back to mind.

Anyway, this tip was pretty clear.

But just to finish it off, here’s an actual good meme instead of Dan’s mediocre plebeian meme:

Shout out to all girls on Tinder with a photo from their one week surf initiation. <3

#10: How many tinder photos

What’s the ideal number of pictures to get the most matches?

A much debated question that gets very different answer from different coaches.

Coaches that don’t spend an average of 666 hours per month on Tinder.

Anyway, you’ll be pleased to find out that the answer to this question is in your favor.

One big time dating coach tells his viewers to max out your profile. Fill it all up with photos.

The more, the merrier.

Because showing her nine cool sides of you, is better than one cool side of you… Right?

No, not right.

When I was discussing this over text with a sexy psychologist, she said this:

This was said when 6 was still the maximum amount of Tinder pictures possible

I was impressed with her quick thoughts about the matter.

The kind of girl that makes me think the song ‘God Bless the Internet’ by the rapper SAINt JHN:

She’s on my dick, she knows me from somewhere on TV

And she saw me on the internet

I only let her give me brain, what can I say

I love her intellect

—SAINt JHN

Anyway, I digress.

I have the exact same opinion as this woman.

What screams “TRYHARD!” more than someone filling up every single photo slot?

Sub Communicating: Hey! Look at me and all the cool stuff I do. Look at my face from 5 different angles, I’m beautiful and cool, aren’t I?

Again, no. You’re not cool. You’re something in between desperate and a show-off.

Imagine this:

You come across a profile of a cute girl with 4 or 5 sweet photos…

Then you come across a profile of a cute girl with 9 photos…

Would you be more interested in the girl that showed you 4 or 5 things about herself, of the one that showed 9 things?

If your answer is 9 then you’re a control freak and you to find a priest to help you fight that devil inside of you.

Let me reinforce my opinion with a good ol’ quote from a good ol’ player.

Reveal yourself slowly and only when directly asked.

When the mystery is gone, the seduction is over.

—Your mom

(I THINK this quote was by Casanova himself, but I struggle finding the source. Feel free to correct me in the comments.)

Either way, it’s a damn nice quote.

One that I’ve always kept in the back of my mind during years of meeting women.

Holy Tip:

Retain some mystery in your profile. Don’t fall for the tryhard-trap by posting too many pictures.

Besides this is something to be happy about.

No you don’t need to go on 10 photoshoots to get a set of 69 perfect shots.

You’re all set with just a few.

#11: Mistakes that ruin your Tinder photoshoot

Here’s three common mistakes that butcher your success on Tinder.

I don’t think there’s ever been a time where people took more photos of themselves.

Not only do people take pictures of themselves, they also hire photographer to do the job professionally for them.

My god, the amount of people that made good money of Tinder shoots is incredible.

And justly so.

A Tinder photoshoot is something that can greatly increase sweetness of your Tinderfruit.

BUT, be careful for the most common mistakes

Tinder photoshoot error 1

Don’t use more than 1 photo wearing the same outfit.

Seriously, this just tells the girl you did a Photoshoot that was maybe even done just for online dating. Not that it should be a secret kept in the thickest safe the world has to offer… but it’s not the sexiest thing to do either.

Tinder photoshoot error 2

Don’t use more than 1 photo at the same location.

Same story here, only were you too lazy to move around to different locations.

Tinder photoshoot error 3

Don’t do the same thing in every photo.

I know, you have one angle / facial expression / move that is more flattering than others.

(Or at least you think it is, but it isn’t. More on that in the last tip.)

3 Big no no’s in one profile.

But do yourself a favor.

Try different poses, different angles, different sides of your face, and maybe even different hairstyles. If your hair looks EXACTLY the same in every shot… people will know you had yourself a little photoshoot.

If you make these Tinder photoshoot mistakes, your profile will whisper in her ear:

“Hey girl, you’re seeing this correctly… I didn’t have any dope photos of myself to convince you of my worth. So yes, I booked a professional photographer to make me appear as sexy as possible. And no, nothing else in my life is worth taking a picture of, so I’m using only the photoshoot ones. Love you though x”

See how well your current profile scores with this test!

wowwowwowwow!

Someone just told me there is a way to instantly find out whether your current profile is a lady killer, or a sleep piller…
